CAPT OLIVER T. LEWIS
Commander, Submarine Squadron 12
Captain Lewis, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, graduated with distinction from Boston University in 1991 with a degree in Mathematics and was commissioned through the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps Program. During his career, he also earned a Masters Degree in Engineering Management from Catholic University of America, completed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI, and has been designated as a Joint Qualified Officer..
His sea duty assignments include serving as a Division Officer onboard USS MONTPELIER (SSN 765) for her maiden deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, the Engineer Officer onboard USS PITTSBURGH (SSN 720) for two deployments spanning the North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Gulf, and as Executive Officer onboard USS NEWPORT NEWS (SSN 750) for a CENTCOM deployment. He commanded the USS SAN JUAN (SSN 751) and deployed in direct support of Special Operations tasking for AFRICOM, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation. SAN JUAN was selected as the COMSUBDEVRON TWELVE Battle Efficiency “E” award winner for 2009 and following deployment completed an Engineered Overhaul (EOH) in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard early.
His shore assignments include serving as a requirements officer on the Chief of Naval Operations Staff (N12), Squadron Material Officer for COMSUBRON EIGHT which included tours as Engineer onboard USS BOISE (SSN 764) and USS JACKSONVILLE (SSN 699), providing legislative support on congressional appropriations matters on the Staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as the Naval Submarine School Prospective Commanding Officer Instructor teaching the Submarine Command Course, as the Deputy for Operations of Submarine Development Squadron TWELVE, and then as the first Commodore of Submarine Squadron TWELVE.
Captain Lewis’ personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Defense Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards).
Captain Lewis is married to the former Caroline Campbell, daughter of RADM and Mrs. Arlington Campbell. They are blessed with two daughters, Madeline and Katherine.
