Captain David S. Hunt, USN

United States Navy

Commander, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

 

Captain Hunt was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Marlton, New Jersey. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1990. He earned a Master’s of Business Administration from the Lally School of Management at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1998. In 2001, he earned a Naval Engineer’s degree and a Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

In 1989, Capt. Hunt was accepted into the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate program that led to a commission through Officer Candidate School in 1990. After completing nuclear training, he served as the Electrical and Reactor Controls Division Officers on USS Daniel Boone (SSBN 629) where he completed his Submarine Warfare qualification. Capt. Hunt’s follow-on submarine officer tours were on USS Bluefish (SSN 675) as the Torpedo and Fire Control Division Officer and at Naval Submarine School as a Tactics Instructor and Weapons Department Branch Manager. In 1996, he transferred to the Engineering Duty community.

 

Capt. Hunt’s Engineering Duty Officer assignments include tours at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as the Operations Officer and the Engineering and Planning Department Head; Norfolk Naval Shipyard as Production Resources Department Head, Deputy Project Superintendent on USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) Planned Incremental Availability, and Submarine Type Desk Officer; USARCENT Individual Augment with Joint CREW Composite Squadron One as Officer in Charge and Chief Technical Officer, countering the RCIED threat for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom; NAVSEA as the Assistant Program Manager for the ACAT 1 SSGN ERO/Conversion Program (PMS 398), where he delivered the first three SSGNs; Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility where he served as a Project Superintendent for Dry-docking Selected Restricted Availabilities and as the Submarine Program Manager, implementing the Theory of Constraints/Critical Chain Project Management pilot program.

 

Capt. Hunt was previously assigned to Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) as the Military Deputy for Shipyard Operations until assuming command of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on July 29, 2016.

 

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service medal (four awards), the Navy Commendation medal (two awards), the Navy Achievement medal (three awards), the National Defense Service medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service medals.
